Aaron felt despondent. His teammates were being kind to him, but he knew that he was the reason that his team lost the swim meet against the neighboring college. How many people could lose with a four-second lead against someone they had beaten so easily last year? As he walked out of the locker room, he noticed that he had blurred vision. Over the last week he had mid-term exams and papers to write, and recently typing made his hands and fingers ache, and they felt weak. Even swim practice, which helped relieve his stress in the past, had become difficult. As Aaron walked out of the locker room, he looked up and saw his boyfriend, Mark, waiting for him. As they walked back to his dorm, Aaron thought how nice it was to have Mark to support him during such a tough time. Aaron was gasping for air and felt weaker than ever after they had walked up the two flights of stairs to his floor. He told himself that he must set some time aside next week to do something about this constant fatigue. Aaron had already packed his bags for the trip home and Mark was able to carry all of his stuff to his car in one trip. When he returned to the room he found Aaron reclining on the bed with his eyes closed. He asked him if he was ready to go. “Sure, I just can’t keep my eyes open these days. I am sure I’ll be better when we’re home.” Mark knew that Aaron liked to drive, so when they got to the car he handed him the keys. He tried to take them, but his fingers didn’t seem to work and he dropped his keys on the ground. Mark grabbed the keys and opened the passenger door for Aaron. As they set off for home, Mark asked, “Are you feeling okay? You’re not usually so exhausted after a swim meet, and you seem to be having trouble catching your breath. I am worried about you.” Mark thought that this was probably the best time to suggest that he see a doctor. 1. Summarize the setting (background) for this case.
