Case Study: Kimberly Ann BergalisKimberly Ann Bergalis was one of six patients infected with HIV after undergoing a dental procedure from David J. Acer, a Floridadentist who was HIV positive, in December 1987.Bergalis was diagnosed with HIV in January 1990 and died of AIDS at the age of 23 in December 1991. It was one of the first known cases of clinical transmission of HIV. Dr. Acer had been diagnosed with HIV several years earlier and continued to practice dentistry without disclosing his status to his patients, which was not required by law.As a result of this case, the CDC proposed barring HIV-infected healthcare professionals from procedures in which the virus might be transmitted. However, opponents of the proposed regulations argued that this case was an anomaly and that testing all healthcare professionals would be inefficient and ineffective and would unfairly discriminate against them. Thus, the legislations did not pass.1. Should it be mandated that HIV-positive healthcare professionals inform their patients of their status?2. What can be done to prevent exposure of HIV and other infectious diseases in a healthcare setting?3. What should the consequences be if an HIV-positive healthcare professional infected his or her patients today?
