Reflecting on Action: this situation could have been avoided through clearer communication and expectations. Maybe if the medical student had been introduced to the care team, given a brief run down, and briefed on his role and/or limitations, he may have felt more comfortable asking questions. The nurse also had the opportunity to turn the mistake into a learning experience by calmly and respectfully explaining the consequences.Reflecting in Action: The nurse could have taken a moment and paused so that she could manage her emotional response and choose a more respectful tone. Saying something such as “Let’s talk about what happened when I have a free moment, as the patient’s safety is my current priority”. (Dames, 2020). May have been better as this would have acknowledged the current issue and the student without shutting him down entirely.Reflecting for Action: This scenario highlights the real need for a supportive environment to learn in. Using tools like Respectful Conversations framework is a good guide for navigating difficult interactions in a way that promotes learning, trust and collaboration among team members.I have a few examples of disrespectful interactions with other health care professionals, but i’ll mention one l had with a physician. I had approached him to clarify a medication order as he was finishing up rounds on my unit and he shut me down basically saying he had already dealt with it and to not waste his time. I was advocating for my resident’s safety so, I was very frustrated so, I just brought my concern to my RN supervisor. Looking back, I wish I had have stood up for myself and been a bit more persistent (while remaining respectful) as l was concerned about my resident. I could have checked perception by saying something along the lines of “I know you’re busy, but l’d really like to clarify something to ensure patient safety”. (Dames,2020). Then, I could have elaborated on my concerns. This would show empathy and acknowledge their workload while also demonstrating patient advocacy. Reply to the above showing your understanding
