This activity focused on supervision and delegation of care, an important responsibility for registered nurses. It involved us answering some questions out loud in class. These included the challenges we had already encountered in our professional placements in terms of supervision, the difficulties we might encounter as newly registered nurses in delegation and supervision and how to overcome these challenges. We also discussed our responsibilities when delegating to other team members and how to decide to delegate. The purpose of the activity was to get us to reflect on our experiences around supervision and delegation as students on placement and learn better ways of doing it as graduate nurses. This activity met some of the topic’s expected learning outcomes by helping me develop skills, knowledge, and strategies that assist in constructing a plan for ongoing professional development as a graduate nurse. It also helped me reflect on some of the professional competencies required for employment as a graduate nurse, which include supervision and delegation skills. Supervision and delegation are important concepts in nursing practice because they improve efficiency and patient safety. Delegation is the process of assigning tasks to others while, supervision is the process of monitoring and guiding those who you assigned the tasks. Delegation allows registered nurses to assign tasks to others while still maintaining control over the overall care process. Supervision ensures delegated tasks are being carried safely and effectively. The concept of supervision and delegation improves patient outcomes by ensuring tasks are carried out correctly and in a timely manner. From the activity, I learned some of the challenges newly registered nurses face in relation to supervision and delegation. These challenges include a lack of understanding of delegation, lack of experience, and lack of trust. Lack of understanding delegation can lead to newly registered nurses not delegating enough tasks, leaving themselves overwhelmed and overworked; leading to burnout. Lack of experience in delegation would lead to delegation errors because graduate nurses may not know the best ways to delegate tasks. Lack of trust can lead to under and over-delegation, as newly registered nurses may be unwilling to delegate tasks or delegate too much responsibility to others. This activity informed my future nursing practice by teaching me strategies to overcome these delegation challenges as a new nurse. These include education, practice, and building trust. Education is an important strategy for reducing delegation difficulties, as it can help new registered nurses better understand delegation and supervision concepts. Practice is also important, as it helps nurses to become more familiar with delegation and to learn how to delegate tasks effectively. Building trust is another important strategy, as it ensures new registered nurses are comfortable delegating tasks to others who have been there longer and that those assigned the tasks can carry out the tasks effectively while respecting the authority of the new registered nurse.5.
